Coder. 3x Founder.

Currently EIR @ Sutter Hill Ventures

I've spent 20+ years building data infrastructure at scale — from Google to founding Wavefront (acquired by VMware for $400M) to investing in technical founders. Now I'm figuring out the next one.

What I'm Doing Now

Exploring new ventures as EIR at Sutter Hill Ventures. I'm in the early-stage idea, prototyping, and conversation phase. If you're a builder, operator, or potential collaborator working on something at the intersection of AI, data, and real human impact, I'd love to hear from you.

Summary

Born and raised in Hong Kong, I left at 17 for Rice University and have been dual-homing between San Francisco and Hong Kong ever since. I spent three years at Google as a Staff Engineer working on fraud and abuse systems, earning a Founders' Award in 2010.

I was a founding engineer at GLMX, which today processes over $1T in daily trading volume. I co-founded Wavefront as Chief Architect — we built a real-time analytics platform ingesting 20M+ data points per second, acquired by VMware for $400M. At VMware, I served as VP and Principal Engineer, helping grow the business 10x in revenue.

Most recently, I co-founded Lirvana Labs (2021–2025) with my sister Christie, building AI Learning Companions and the children's brand Yeti Confetti Kids. After 20+ years in tech, I'm now EIR at Sutter Hill Ventures, exploring what's next.

After 20+ years based in the US, I'm now splitting my time between San Francisco and Hong Kong — living for the first time as an adult near The Peak. If you're in HK, I'd love to connect — don't hesitate to reach out!

How I Think About Work

Build for real problems, at real scale.

The most rewarding work I’ve done has been the kind where the system has to actually hold up under load and the users actually depend on it. Toy problems bore me.

The long game.

GLMX is the clearest lesson I’ve ever had on this. We thought we’d built the wrong product and most of us moved on; the team that stayed turned it into a trillion-dollar-a-day exchange. Conviction and timing matter more than cleverness.

Vertical slices over horizontal layers.

Ship something end-to-end on day one. Then make it better.

Testing isn’t optional.

Every feature ships with tests. I learned this the hard way more than once.

Hire for trainability and team fit, not just the resume.

The best engineers I’ve worked with were people I’d want to be in a foxhole with.

Direct, written communication.

I’d rather have a clear paragraph than a meeting.

Family first.

Work has to fit around the people I love, not the other way around.

Faith.

I’m a Christian, and that shapes how I think about purpose, risk, and what’s enough.

Investing

Investing in technical founders.

Most of the value I try to add lives outside the check itself: technical architecture reviews, GTM thinking, vetting key hires, and the late-night counseling sessions founders actually need. I take a small number of relationships seriously rather than spraying checks.
